Driving down carbon cost

8 August 2007

As the country continues to focus on reducing its ‘carbon footprint’, staff at movewithus have been doing their bit to ensure they are helping out their environment. A car share scheme has recently been introduced, with a staggering 79 per cent of the population signing up immediately to help out, reducing the number of cars on site by 67 every day. This is a great achievement that actually arose from the wishes of the staff. The employees, through the staff council, pushed through the idea in order to help their workplace become ‘greener’. Staff at movewithus are encouraged to input their own ideas and the company are more than willing to act upon those that all parties feel to be beneficial.

Recent figures indicate that 60 per cent of cars on our roads only have one occupant, and that 84 per cent of commuters travel alone. By creating a car share system the average Cambridgeshire commuter could potentially save up to £1000 if traveling on a regular basis. Caroline Hart, People Director movewithus says: “Not all companies are as willing to co-operate as movewithus and the staff should be very proud that they are one of the 11 per cent of businesses that are willing to reduce their vehicle emissions and really rally round together to do their all in reducing damaging emissions.”

On top of this, the food available at the company café has been subsidised to encourage the staff to stay on site, reducing the amount of traffic present during the lunch period. They have also introduced recycling methods to eradicate any unnecessary waste. Separate waste bins are now available for the different materials being disposed of. Although differentiating between plastic and paper may seem small on the grander scheme of things, but these recycling methods unquestionably help in protecting our planet.

Caroline adds: “Such a simple format really does go a long way. Saving petrol money, cutting traffic congestion and more importantly reducing carbon emissions are huge benefits and the staff at movewithus should be very pleased with their contribution, not only as individuals but as a collective team in helping to tackle this problem.”
